Because "Safety NOT Power, Myth, Ideology or Revenue!" is too long a web address..."We're mad as he hell mad we're not go to take it anymore" sounds about right. The real irony here is we can have it all; safer roads, reduced carbon footprint, freedom from enforcement traps and a healthier and wealthier society! In every case since the 1970's, when we had our first game changing energy crisis, our government and the special interest who now run it have had no regard whatsoever for our safety, due process of law, the greater good of the "We the People" or what's best for the country! What we know for sure is the last four decades since has proven the axiom;
"Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
Our Founding Fathers intended our government "to be for and of the people"; "We the People". Despite the bleak current state of affairs, our Law of the Land still says we have the power, and applying it we can affect change. The Best Highway Safety Practices Institute's radical objective is to make our roads safer, assure justice for all and advance the general welfare of the people; the core aspiration of our society's heritage and ethos.
The disconnect between the what's best for the people and the self interest of a few has infected every part of Washington, the media and the nation for that matter. Nonetheless, we must strive to advance justice, safer roads, the environment and productivity, too. In doing so we can also return due process to our traffic courts, shut down enforcement traps, red light cameras, photo radar etc... in short the entire for profit citation industry. Thus, by demanding due process of law and returning safety to empirical findings that have been proven to work, these for profit faux safety programs can be eliminated.
How many fights can you take on at once? Not many. But there is a common thread that remains constant. Be it roadway safety or our energy policies, when you sit in the meetings, each group advances its own agendas and those representing "We the People" are not invited nor is altruism per se welcome. How can this happen? Because "We the People" are only concerned with what is best for society and there is no money, or power, in doing the right thing, nor is there massive budgets to underwrite our representation. What about our elected representatives, they belong to the highest bidder or the sound bite that may get them reelected, and the committees are made up of stakeholders in the process.
More importantly, besides the fact we haven't acted in the last forty years to become energy self sufficient, the real tragedy is the thousands that our safety institutions and insurance companies are killing and maiming to sustain these empires and revenue streams. Weekly, another family member comes forth to us asking for help to eliminate the cause of their loved one's death. In every case, they cite the safety myths of NHTSA, IIHS et al as the solution when in most cases, these deaths were a direct consequence poor oversight, practices and their empire building. The ultimate non sequiturs, how many government safety programs have been discontinued because they worked? How many insurance safety initiatives reduced premiums, or courts went out of business because they found due process more important than its self interest?

The latest assault highway safety by the USDOT has been the complete cessation of true traffic safety research. For the past decade they have only been funding agenda driven propaganda where the outcome is preordained, and all research that does not support the current political agenda has been purged from their websites and resource centers. Congress's pork barrel projects and special interest have all but gutted what little funding there was for true safety programs and or caused them to go unfunded and or be cancelled altogether. While they spend billion on fine collection and pork, thousand die EACH YEAR for the want of highway and standards improvements.
Keep in mind with just 6 photo enforcement vehicles, the City of Washington DC was able to write 80,000 citations in one month. At those levels, in the name of $afety, you will be seeing much more of this soon. There is a federal campaign now to spread this success throughout the nation, and in each state now you will see prepared campaigns and supporting materials emerge to support this new program. One of its cornerstones is to fine the owner, not the driver, thereby eliminating those pesky due-process impediments to automated fine collection. They have been so emboldened by their complete control of us sheeple, there is no longer any facade that traffic fines are safety driven in the new model law - US Uniform Vehicle Code (UVC).
The real irony is that our most effective weapon is the law, because these conditions cannot exist and or be financially viable unless the city, state etc has not followed the law... may sound strange, but it is true. If best engineering practices are applied, the roads become safer and these for profit enterprises are all but shut down.
Safe roads is a process, involving primarily best engineering practices (50-70 percent of all potential accident reduction). Notwithstanding, if law enforcement is properly utilized it can be an important part of this safety team, too, if they are used for safety and not revenue.
